Barcelona wakes up
eating sugar.

Before the terraces fill and the queues form, this city has breakfast standing up: churros dipped in chocolate thick enough to hold the spoon upright, in places that have been doing exactly that for decades.

We start at a churrería the neighbourhood uses, then walk into a traditional market while the traders are still setting out — the hour when you can actually talk to them.

It is the gentlest tour we run and the one families book twice. No alcohol, no long distances, and everybody is in a good mood because they have just eaten chocolate.

The route

Churros and thick chocolate, standing at the counter, the way it is done.

A working market at trading hour: the stalls, the produce and the vocabulary.

What else Barcelona eats in the morning, and where the good bakeries hide.

One last stop before the group breaks up, usually where the guide has their own coffee.

The whole point is the hour. Churrerías and markets are morning businesses — by midday the experience is a different, worse one.

Churros are wheat and the chocolate is dairy. Tell us in advance about coeliac or dairy allergies and we will be honest about what we can arrange.

It replaces it, comfortably. Come hungry and do not eat at the hotel first.

It is our best tour for children: sweet, short and no alcohol. Under-fives usually come free — ask us.

A working traditional market, chosen for the day and the departure so we arrive at trading hour rather than at the tourist hour.
